1968 and earlier timing covers had 8 bolt water pumps. 1969 and newer timing covers had 11 bolt water pumps. Timing covers all will bolt up, but you need to use the matching dampers and water pumps for '67 and '68. '69 was different because there was a short 4-inch pump casting for Firebirds only. After '69, water pumps never changed again. The '64-65, 66, 67, & 68 timing cover is approximately 2 11/16" thick and with water pump mounted, there is a distance of aprox 6 1/2" from block mating surface to water pump pulley mating flange. The '69 and newer timing cover is approximately 2" thick and with water pump mounted, distance is approximately 7" from block mating surface to water pump pulley mating flange.

The '66 tripower engine used same timing coiver as std '66 engine. The main reason one usually has to worry about a timing cover when installing on a '66 tripower engine, is the timing covers up through at least early '74, had a recess cast into the top back to clear a tripower water neck.
