The project plan is as follows:
-
During the winter of 2003-4, install the old TurboFORCE
package on the
1976 Firebird Esprit 350
test car. This will be the blow-through the QJet configuration. A difference from the original kit is that a high pressure electric fuel pump with pressure-referenced regulator will replace the Carter electric and Pontiac mechanical fuel pump arrangment. The old Rajay 301E will require an overhaul, but other components are OK although some small pieces are missing.
-
Test to baseline the performance. The original Pontiac 350 is tired, so power will not be up to optimum. Note that testing will occur in southern Nevada, so weather should not hinder the schedule.
-
In the meantime, overhaul the donated 1973 Pontiac 400. Nothing trick, just making sure that it is reliable and has good cylinder seal.
-
Swap out the 350 for the fresh 400. Test to baseline the performance.
-
During the spring of 2004, obtain an Edelbrock Victor EFI as soon as available. Swap the QJet and stock intake for the Victor EFI. Tune the computer, et al to achieve optimum performance. Then test various aftermarket bonnets for fitment and performance.
If available, fit the RTech SuperCooler; test performance and optimize the computer fuel curve.
-
Feature the EFI-equipped TurboFORCE test Firebird in a magazine article.
